Number 9: “Don’t be angry with me, I’m just trying to help.”

This is one of the most common phrases narcissists use to control you, and it’s all because of how we are trained to think about helping others. We’re taught that helping is inherently good and that we should always try to help other people, even if they don’t want our help or aren’t asking for it. But what narcissists say: “Don’t be angry with me, I’m just trying to help”, they’re being manipulative and controlling.

Narcissists love to make you feel guilty, and they’ll do it by telling you that they’re just trying to help you. They use this classic line of manipulation to keep their victims from pushing back. It’s a way for them to Gaslight you into believing your anger is unwarranted. It allows them to make up for their mistakes without taking responsibility or apologizing outright.

Number 10: “If you loved me, you’d do this for me.”

Narcissists frequently use this phrase to manipulate their victims into doing what they want. It is a clear example of narcissists attempting to make it appear as if the other person has no other choice. If the victim does not want to do what the narcissist desires, the victim does not love them well enough. This can result in an emotional blackmail situation, in which the narcissist uses their victim’s love for them to get their way.

Narcissists frequently do not feel loved unless you do exactly what they want, and if you don’t, it’s their way or the highway. Find yourself in a relationship with a narcissist, you’ll often find yourself wondering how to get out of it. The more you try to leave, the harder it will be for them to let go of their control over you, and the more control they have over you, the more they can manipulate and abuse you.

These 10 phrases will help you recognize that you are being controlled by the narcissist. If any of these look familiar to you, it may be trying to consider ties and ending the relationship.
