Number 3: They criticize or belittle the things that you love most.

The narcissist’s real side can be a shock to you. If you’re with a narcissist, they’ll likely criticize or belittle the things you love most. They don’t understand that the things you love are special to you because of how much time and thought went into them. They do this because they can’t see beyond themselves. This is meant to make you feel bad about yourself, making them feel better than you.

This behavior can make you feel judged and unloved, which can be precisely what the narcissist wants. It gives them an excuse for why they don’t need to consider other people’s feelings or needs. Narcissists don’t empathize with others, so it’s not about what they think of your hobbies or interests; it has everything to do with trying to control and manipulate you.

Number 4: They make everything about them.

Narcissists believe they are the most important person in the world, so when they’re around you, it’s not just about you; it’s about them. They will want to talk about themselves and their accomplishments, even if it’s utterly unrelated to the current topic. You may feel like you’re being lectured or that you’re expected to be in all of them. When you see the narcissist’s real side, they’ll make everything about them.

Narcissists may also try to monopolize the conversation by interrupting and changing the subject whenever it suits them. They might even jump from one topic to another without giving you time to process what’s happening around you. Likely, they’ll just brush off your requests for help and try to make you feel like nothing is enough for them.

Number 5: They will not take responsibility for their actions.

Narcissists will blame anyone and everyone else for what happened. They’ll also blame you for being upset about it. If you try to talk about it, they’ll be defensive and claim that you’re making things up or misinterpreting things, even if you weren’t. When you see the narcissist’s real side, you’ll notice that they don’t take responsibility for their actions. Because narcissists need to prove themselves as better than everyone else, they believe admitting their mistakes would undermine their image and make them look weak.

Even if you may prove that they did something wrong, narcissists will act as though nothing is wrong. They’ll make excuses instead of taking ownership and then return as if nothing happened.
