Number 5: Smear campaign.
One of the truest signs that you have hurt a narcissist is that they will engage in an all-out smear campaign. A lot of this is damage control because you’ve hurt them, and they know that you see them for who they are and can tell other people exactly who they are. They’re going to try to discredit you before you can do that. Another reason why a narcissist will engage in a smear campaign is for revenge. This is really at the root of what happens when a narcissist is hurt; when they are feeling pain, they are going to lash out and try to make you feel that pain because that’s the only thing that’s going to make them feel better. These are some Strategies to deal with a SMEAR CAMPAIGN.

Now, if you’ve done some work on yourself, you know that there are other ways you can make yourself feel better, such as going to therapy or talking to supportive people that you can trust. Well, that takes a little bit more work than just lashing out at someone else, and that’s definitely not work that a narcissist is willing to do. This is exactly why, for the narcissist, these things keep coming up again, they keep getting triggered, they keep getting hurt, and they keep lashing out at other people. It’s like an endless cycle because they refuse to do the work necessary to actually heal and stop the cycle.

The trauma bond describes a feeling of attachment that you feel toward someone who’s been incredibly abusive to you. If you’re feeling this pull to a person that you know has hurt you time and time again and probably will do it again, the fond feelings are kind of almost inexplicable but yet they’re there.
