3. “I Promise!”
Another common trait of chronic narcissists is that they often don’t follow through on promises or responsibilities. This can show up in small ways, like skipping appointments or not finishing tasks, or in more serious ways, like walking away from important commitments or relationships.
Because they are self-centered and focused on their own needs, narcissists usually keep their promises only when it benefits them. They don’t truly connect with people—they use them. They may say all the right things, but their actions rarely match their words.
Studies have linked high levels of narcissism with behaviors like being unreliable, unfaithful, manipulative, and generally hard to trust.
4. “Don’t Worry!”
Many narcissists don’t care much about rules or boundaries. They may do things that are dishonest, unfair, or even illegal. This can include small things like breaking traffic laws, cutting in line, not returning borrowed items, or taking things from work. It can also involve more serious actions, like lying about money, breaking the law, or mistreating people in relationships.
Some narcissists enjoy breaking rules because it makes them feel powerful and special. They believe the rules don’t apply to them. If you try to call them out or show concern, they often have smooth and convincing responses, saying things like “Don’t worry, it’ll all work out”—even when it doesn’t.
