Psychologist Stephen Johnson says that narcissists often hide their true selves because of early emotional wounds. Instead of being their real selves, they create a fake version that seems confident and impressive. This false version usually looks proud, selfish, and full of themselves. In today’s society, where people are encouraged to focus on looks, success, and status, narcissistic behavior is very common—and sometimes even rewarded.
Many people think narcissism just means someone who loves themselves too much. But in reality, a narcissist is often in love with a perfect version of themselves that they show to the world. They do this to hide their true feelings, which often include pain, shame, and a deep sense of not being good enough. Inside, many narcissists feel like the “ugly duckling”—but they try hard not to let anyone, including themselves, see that.
