1.  A dead giveaway for the covert narcissist is, having a victim mentality.

 Covert narcissists gain insane amounts of narcissistic supply from portraying themselves as a victim. They are the victim of their childhood, the victim of their marriage, the victim of the job, the victim of their friends, you name it, but they are the poor pitiful victim. And you would likely be surprised to discover how successful these people are at convincing other people that they are indeed a victim.

And covert narcissists are keenly aware of how effective the victim role works in order to manipulate and take advantage of other people. They know if they can get you to actually believe this victim nonsense, they are feeding you. If they can get you to pity them, they can exploit you indefinitely if you will let them.  So while the overt narcissist is very good at manipulating people with money, or recognition, or even fear and intimidation, the covert narcissists will utilize victimhood and pity to get you to do what they want.

 So anytime you interact with a person who seems to always be down on their luck or always has this life narrative that they are a victim, nothing ever seems to get any better, then you need to take a very close in-depth look at this person because they very well might be a covert narcissist.
