With all that in mind, the narcissist seeks to destroy their victims by exposing them in order to get other people to abandon and insult them. The narcissist successfully gets to do all three by initiating the smear campaign.
The smear campaign is the narcissist’s way of exposing authentic, genuine people. Because when the narcissist realizes, which they do, that we are not fake, that we are not pretending, and also that our lives are not built on lies like theirs, they have to invent, they have to create an image of us that is distasteful and wholesomely unpleasant to turn people away from us.
The smear campaign usually starts off very small, but the longer the narcissist is in your life, you can be sure that they are actively recruiting flying monkeys and slandering you constantly behind your back. The narcissist is all about smiling in your face, then stabbing you in the back. They would praise you and compliment you, then turn to someone else and drag you through the mud.

The cherry on top of all of this is if they’re able to gaslight you to the point where you lose all hope, confidence, independence, and even your sanity, so that others will be completely sold on the lies the narcissist told about you being crazy or mentally unstable.
Gaslighting is basically the narcissist’s way of making the false-negative image they have created of you a reality. They work tirelessly to change us and break us; this is why the smear campaign is so important. Their aim is to turn people against you, make it seem that you are the evil, crazy, selfish one. But also, they like to make others believe that we are fake.
