Number 12: They like to brag.

Sometimes, in order to get attention, they have to brag and tell others how amazing they are. They don’t care about other people. It’s all about them. When they pretend to be interested in other people, it’s just really because they want to draw an audience towards themselves – they desperately need that. If the fake nice person joins a group of people in conversation, even if they don’t know anybody in the group, it won’t be long before they try to take over by singing their own praises and telling everybody how wonderful they are.

Number 11: Gossip is their game.

When they’re with you, they’ve got lots to say about other people. And when you’re not around, they’re probably saying the same sorts of things about you. Be careful about what you tell such a person. To your face, they might seem very nice, but the moment you turn your back it’s a different story. They want to be liked and they might think that putting other people down makes them look better.

In the stories that they come up with, they see themselves as the nice guys, while other people are the bad guys. Or, they see themselves as the victims because in their minds, other people are treating them badly. If they don’t have something bad to say about a specific person, they’ll make something up.

Number 10: They only respect people with power.

A genuinely nice person will be respectful to everybody, regardless of their social position. Fake nice people will make sure they know who the decision-makers are, and focus on being nice to them. They won’t care so much about anybody else, even being nasty to those they feel are less powerful or who can’t do anything for them. In a restaurant, they might be very disrespectful towards the waiter.

Let’s say they are trying to catch a plane and arrive at the airport just a little too late to be allowed onto the flight. They will be very nice to the airline representatives while pleading to be let onto the plane. But if things don’t work out, and their efforts don’t succeed, they will become unpleasant and say nasty things to the very people they were being nice to a few seconds before.

Number 9: They give lavish gifts.

For them, there is a certain prestige involved in giving extravagant or expensive gifts, especially if they’re more expensive than what others are giving. They are competitive, and the kind of gifts they are able to give sets them apart from others. They want to be recognized for giving the best gifts.
