How to Identify a Narcissist from a Conversation

Number 5: They speak more than they listen.

Talking to a narcissist is hard when you have so much to say, but the narcissist won’t let you say any of it. Speaking to a narcissist usually means that they speak more than listen. Narcissistic people love to talk over people and control the direction of the conversation. It is part of their egotistical nature. Speaking over others helps them feel in control. Constantly interrupting and cutting them off to talk more tells the victim, “You have no control in any aspect of this relationship, even the conversation.” That is something important to look for when attempting to identify any narcissist in your life.

If you feel like you are listening and not speaking, and all of the listenings you are doing is all about them, then you are more than likely talking to a narcissist. Another good way to indicate if someone is a narcissist by conversation is if they are constantly speaking about things you are not comfortable with. We wanted to include this in this section because a narcissist will hear you say repeatedly that you are not comfortable talking about a certain topic, but the narcissist will not listen and understand.

The narcissist will continually bring up topics and ideas that make you feel vulnerable and weak. They will notice you feel uncomfortable and your body language will change, and they will prey on that. A narcissist’s mouth is bigger than their ears.

Number 6: They become sensitive if you don’t agree with them.

This last one is important because most people who hold conversations with others are accepting and okay with everyone having different opinions. Narcissists are a little different. With narcissistic people believing they are the smartest and greatest people to walk around, if you express that you do not agree with their opinions, they may become overly sensitive and may even express some narcissistic rage. Narcissistic rage is common in people who suffer from NPD. This includes lashing out at the victim, creating a hostile environment, and guilting the victim into changing their mind.

This is another great way to spot a narcissist, by their ability to accept differences of opinion and be open-minded to others’ thoughts. In a narcissist’s mind, it is “my way or the highway”. This sensitivity can include verbal or physical backlash or the silent treatment. Once the disagreement happens, a narcissist will silence themselves and change their body language to indicate they are not speaking till the victim realizes why they are wrong.
