1. The Narcissist Is Not Comfortable.

 The first reason could be that the Narcissist is not comfortable. There are certain situations and people that can make a Narcissist uncomfortable, and their response is usually to shut down.

Narcissists love familiarity. They love being the center of attention and they love knowing what to expect so that they can have the appropriate mask ready to go. Narcissists are creatures of habit as it allows them to have a sense of control. So, if they meet a new bunch of people, for example, and there is someone in that group who is more outgoing and sociable, and just getting more attention, the Narcissist tends to shut down as they seethe with anger.

 Narcissists love attention, compliments, and praise, and if someone else is the focus and not them, they just prefer to shut down all together. They also do not like to be around people who speak the truth or lack tact, so they are bound to be reserved around these types of people as well.

And, of course, if you had to ask them why they are so quiet, they will probably just give a lame excuse that they are tired or not feeling too well. But the truth is that the Narcissist has been taken out of their comfort zone and they’re in a situation where someone else is the focus of attention and not them- All of this makes them anxious and annoyed. And the people who are the source of their discomfort and anger and sure to become future targets.
