You could be minding your own business and doing your job well, for example, or you’re just bubbly and funny and others like to be around you. Well, a narcissist in your space may already have their eye on you because narcissists love attention, and nothing annoys them more than when they see someone else receiving that attention and recognition that they think they deserve.
So if someone else is funnier, smarter, or more confident, that will cause the narcissist to hate that person. Even those narcissists who are introverted and wouldn’t put themselves out there like other narcissists, they hate it, when others around them are bold enough to do it and receive the admiration, attention, and praise that the narcissist craves so much.

And this is where the narcissist begins to envy that person, and plot for their demise because in their minds, only they are entitled and deserving of it.
The second situation is when they are unable to break or destroy their victims.
The narcissist wants to win at everything, and that includes destroying their victims. Seeing their victims suffer and fail is what will bring them joy, but when we Excel and evolve into brighter better beings, that angers the narcissist. So when we go no contact or better yet ignore the narcissist and live our lives to the fullest, it really pisses them off. And it’s because they have lost their power over us.
Because even if they discarded you, they want to keep tabs on you, to see what you are up to, to see if you have recovered or moved on. They don’t want us to prosper or flourish without them. So when we do it, it makes them seethe with anger, and they also lose sleep trying to work out what more they can do to bring us down.
