3. The Narcissist Wants To Be Chased.
The final reason I have as to why a Narcissist would go silent would be to manipulate someone into chasing them or giving in to them. Because when a Narcissist cannot get their way, going silent is a form of punishment that is subtle and insidious.
By withholding communication, the Narcissist is forcing the other person to be the one to induce conversation and also try to cheer them up. They usually want you to beg them to interact with you again and to do what you can to entertain them and make them happy. Narcissists love being chased as it makes them feel needed and important. This is also a game Narcissists like to play when they are bored with their relationships, as it allows them to see the effect of their silence on their targets, not at all bothered by its impact.
At the end of the day, it is all entertainment to the Narcissist when they can hurt you, make you worry, or just dampen your mood. This is why it is so important to not be emotionally invested in these types of people as their aim is to destabilize you emotionally and ruin your life.

But to conclude, those are the 3 top reasons why a Narcissist would go Silent or stop engaging with the people around them. It could be they are just not comfortable, they are scheming or up to no good, or finally they just want to see you squirm. Narcissists are miserable people and nothing makes them happier than making someone else’s life miserable. And when they can’t, this too leads to the Narcissist being silent as they are depressed and consumed by their own misery.
So apart from the three main reasons I just provided, this bonus reason as you see has nothing to do with outside forces. It has nothing to do with the people around them, but instead with everything that the Narcissist is usually trying to suppress; such as their shame, feelings of worthlessness, etc. It can make them very moody and withdrawn, but of course, especially for the Covert Narcissists this is usually only seen by the people they live with.
Narcissists are sad, miserable people, and when they are not performing and they are in their safe zones, most of the time they are just dark, silent, and moody. But whatever is the cause of the silence, it is never a good thing when the Narcissist stops talking.
